Regular and Life Members
First, I’d like to say Happy Holiday’s to all our members and wish you good health and well being in the upcoming year.
This has been a year of transition with new Officers and Canteen Manager taking over the reins of the Post. Our one and ONLY Goal has been to improve and upgrade the pleasure and experience of our members as they visit the Post for their pleasure and relaxation. It is our intention to continue in this endeavor by adding additional gaming and machines as they become approved by the State Legislature and the City of Solon. We also plan to serve more meals from our kitchen on a regular basis as well as parties and fund raising functions. Our main goal is to insure ALL our patrons and members are treated with dignity and respect.
Sometime after January 2014, the Executive board will be forced to raise annual dues for all non-Life members due to the VFW National increasing their overall dues to all members.
One of the unfortunate issues that faces us, our membership is getting older and shrinking. The VFW and other Veterans organizations reached their peak in the years immediately following World War II when it was the socially acceptable place to be as a Veteran. There were always members of like experiences to spend a few hours with over a cocktail and good conversation. The Korean War added another surge of Veterans. Then came the Vietnam War which rapidly became the most unpopular war in US History. Though the Young soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen fought and died like they did in any other American War or conflict, the existing Veterans Organizations were slow in accepting these young Veterans into their fold. And finally learning our lessons from the Vietnam Era, our Country now holds their Veterans close regardless of conflict or War as it should be. But unfortunately, these young Veterans are not flocking to any of the Veterans organizations YET, but they will also come in their time if we stay a viable VFW Post that is willing to change and adapt to their members needs and desires.
Two of the most important issues facing our Post now, is our membership has gotten much older and the majority of them are in their retirement years and many who are life members in fact live in different parts of the country and very seldom if ever enter our Post. So the question I pose to ALL the rest of our Regular members still living in the immediate area is we need your help. I know some of you are sick or otherwise not able to attend Post functions regularly, but for the ones that are, we need your help. For our Post to continue to operate, we MUST have sufficient regular members willing to run for the various Post Elected Offices annually and/or accept the various appointed positions yearly. We also maintain one of the few Military Honor Guards in the Cleveland area. And the only one on the eastside. We very much need new blood on our Honor Guard. We pay for the uniforms. The Honor Guard performs Gravesite Ceremonial Duties throughout the area, Various Veteran Pinning and recognition ceremonies throughout the East side in Conjunction with the VA and then participates in numerous Ceremonial Civic events in the surrounding areas.
So to end this letter, I want to thank all off you for your service to your country and your many years in a lot cases of your participation in the VFW. But I need and ask for some of your participation again. We need to maintain a dedicated Post Officer corps to continue the positive and continued direction of Post 1863. For those interested in either the Honor Guard or Post Officer position or both, please contact Tom Bulanda Commander and/or Harry Crawford
Adjutant/Quartermaster to express your interest.
